Vigo urban accessibility infrastructure improvements

Overview

The municipal government of Vigo has implemented new accessibility infrastructure to improve mobility in the city’s steep areas. Initial works included the installation of ramps at Pintor Colmeiro, Paseo de Granada, and other locations, with maintenance contracts assigned to TK Elevadores España S.L.

Following safety testing, the city launched four new mechanical ramps on Pintor Colmeiro street. This 2.5 million euro project addresses a 10% incline and completes a mechanical corridor between López Mora and Hispanidad. The intervention also included urban humanization efforts, such as expanded pedestrian zones, new green spaces, renovated sanitation and water networks, and improved LED lighting. Mayor Abel Caballero noted that the project significantly improves access to a local health center located at the top of the street.

As part of the ‘Vigo Vertical’ project, the Juan Ramón Jiménez glass elevator has reached a milestone with its opening. This infrastructure connects the Auditorio Mar de Vigo area with Torrecedeira, overcoming an 11-meter elevation change. The project cost approximately 1.15 million euros, with the Diputación providing roughly 760,000 euros (approximately 66% of the costs) and the Vigo City Council covering the remainder. The site includes a walkway designed as a viewpoint overlooking the Ría and a sculpture dedicated to the Nobel Prize-winning writer.
