Viking River Cruises fleet expansion
Overview
Viking River Cruises has expanded its fleet through the delivery of several new vessels. In early October 2026, the company took delivery of the Viking Sekhmet at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, Egypt, for Nile River itineraries.
Following a technical handover in Lelystad, Netherlands, on October 6, 2026, and a formal handover in Basel, Switzerland, on October 8, 2026, Neptun Werft delivered the Viking Rota. This 135-meter Longship-type vessel features a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system and accommodates up to 190 guests.
On October 21, 2026, Viking announced the simultaneous naming of seven new ships during a ceremony in Amsterdam. The group includes the Viking Rota, Viking Haki, Viking Halogi, Viking Sjofn, and Viking Ptah for the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, as well as the Viking Fjolvar for the Seine River. The Viking Sekhmet is scheduled to begin Nile River sailing in 2027. The Viking Rota is set to commence its inaugural passenger cruise on 18 October 2026, traveling the ‘Rhine Getaway’ route from Amsterdam to Basel. These developments support Viking’s goal to expand its river fleet to 114 ships by 2028.
