Violence against women in Bolivia

Overview

In mid-September 2026, several incidents of violence against women were reported in Bolivia.

On September 13, a 19-year-old woman was shot and killed in Sacaba, Cochabamba, during an argument with her partner. This incident was identified as the 60th reported feminicide in Bolivia for the year. The suspect was taken into police custody following the discovery of a .32 caliber revolver at the scene.

By September 18, authorities in Quillacollo, Cochabamba, apprehended 22-year-old Samuel M. R. after the bodies of Joselyn Q. T. (22) and Elizabeth L. V. (24) were discovered in a mechanical workshop. The suspect claimed the women attempted to steal his belongings, a statement currently under investigation by the Fuerza Especial de Lucha Contra la Violencia (Felcv).

In response to the long-term impact of feminicide, which has orphaned 536 children in Bolivia since 2020, the government has moved to implement Law 1680. On October 12, President Rodrigo Paz Pereira promulgated Supreme Decree 5745 to provide economic and social support to children orphaned by feminicide and other crimes against life.

Under this decree, beneficiaries will receive a monthly subsidy of 660 bolivianos, equivalent to 20% of the national minimum wage. For children under five, legal representatives will also receive a monthly food package valued at 20% of the current lactation subsidy. The decree also mandates priority access to public education, health services, and university scholarships. To access these benefits, tutors or legal representatives must register through the Departmental Technical Instances of Social Policy (ITDPS). A surviving parent may only register if they are not implicated in crimes against life. The Ministry of the Presidency is tasked with approving operational regulations within 40 business days.
