Volkswagen Golf GTI anniversary editions and celebrations

Overview

In July 2026, Volkswagen launched the Golf GTI Edition 50, a limited-run model celebrating 50 years of the GTI. To mark Volkswagen’s 75th anniversary in South Africa, Motorsport built a one-off, non-road-homologated GTI producing 1,000 hp. The powertrain uses a re-engineered 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo from the Audi RS3, featuring forged internals, a larger turbocharger, and a front-bumper exhaust system. Mated to all-wheel drive and a bespoke Sadev gearbox, the carbon-fiber shell debuted at the Zwartkops Top-of-the-Hill hill-climb with driver Jonathan Mogotsi.

Volkswagen is further celebrating the GTI's heritage through exhibitions and racing. At the Wheels Mariënwaerdt event in the Netherlands, an exhibition features thirteen GTI models from the Pon Classics collection. Meanwhile, the GTE Racing team is competing in the Belcar Endurance Championship, utilizing a Golf GTI TCR in preparation for the 24 Hours of Zolder.
