Volánbusz bribery and corruption investigation
Overview
The Central Investigative Chief Prosecutor's Office has launched a large-scale investigation into alleged bribery and corruption involving the state-owned passenger transport company, Volánbusz Zrt.
The probe focuses on procurement processes for buses and passenger services occurring between 2015 and 2018. Authorities are examining allegations that funds from state-owned bus companies were diverted through intermediary companies and sham loans into real estate, vehicles, and cash, potentially resulting in a financial loss of approximately 10 billion forints.
As part of a coordinated operation involving nearly 40 officials, three individuals have been detained. These include Dániel Jellinek, CEO of Indotek Group, and Norbert Szivek, the former CEO of the Hungarian National Asset Management Inc. (MNV). Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed the identities of the individuals brought forward.
In response to the detentions, Indotek Group issued statements asserting that Jellinek has committed no crime and has been cooperating with authorities since being summoned. The company expressed confidence that the inquiry will confirm his innocence and noted that the investigation does not affect the group's operations.
