Várzea Grande municipal development initiatives

Overview

The municipal government of Várzea Grande has implemented various social and developmental initiatives focused on environmental awareness, rural productivity, and women's welfare.

Through the Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Rural Development (SEMMADRS), the city conducted environmental education lectures for children aged 9 to 13. As part of the ‘Bombeiros do Futuro’ project at the 2nd Military Firefighters Battalion, sessions led by manager Tathiana Pinheiro covered sustainability topics such as waste separation, the ‘5 Rs’, climate change, and animal welfare, including responsible pet ownership and reporting animal cruelty.

In the agricultural sector, Mayor Flávia Moretti and Secretary Ricardo Amorim visited the Sadia 3 rural community to monitor family farming progress. Supported by the Mato Grosso Research, Assistance, and Rural Extension Company (Empaer), local producers are diversifying into honey, fruit, vegetable, and dairy production. Notable producers, such as Ana Lúcia Morais de Souza, have received recognition for dairy and fruit cultivation. Programs like ‘Quintais Produtivos’ continue to enhance food security through integrated poultry, fish, and vegetable cultivation.

Recent efforts have also expanded to address women's health and empowerment. In observance of ‘Pink October’, the Municipal Health Secretariat is providing cervical cancer screening and mammographies. Additionally, the municipality is recognizing the impact of female producers on the rural economy. According to SEMMADRS, women represent approximately 95% of those managing stalls at the Family Fair, playing a central role in local food production and income generation through crops like bananas and cassava.
