A WalletHub study analyzed U.S. states and cities to rank the best and worst locations for retirement based on 46 metrics, including affordability, healthcare, and quality of life.

At the state level, Kentucky was identified as the worst state for retirees, with low rankings in healthcare and affordability. Other low-ranking states included Oklahoma, Mississippi, and West Virginia. Regarding specific cities, Florida cities dominated the top rankings, with Orlando, Miami, and Tampa leading the list. Minneapolis, Minnesota, also appeared in the top ten.

Conversely, Stockton, California, was ranked as the worst city among 182 locations, primarily due to poor scores in retiree activities. The study noted that California contained six of the ten lowest-scoring cities. Additionally, the report highlighted financial concerns, stating that only 21% of people feel “very confident” they will have enough money to retire comfortably.

In a subsequent report, Florida was identified as the premier state for retirees. Orlando secured the top position among more than 180 U.S. cities analyzed, driven by tax-friendliness—specifically the lack of estate, inheritance, and income taxes—as well as high scores for geriatric hospital access and recreational opportunities. Miami followed in second place, noted for its walkability and volunteer activities, while Tampa took the third spot due to low property crime rates and tax advantages.
