Water infrastructure failures and upgrades in Romania
Overview
Localized water supply disruptions occurred in various Romanian towns due to infrastructure failures. Initially, outages were reported in Aiud, affecting several apartment blocks, and in the coastal city of Constanța, where a burst pipe near Hotel Malibu caused temporary suspensions in the Pescărie and Faleză Nord districts.
Following these incidents, the water utility RAJA expanded emergency repair operations across the Constanța region. In Mangalia, repairs on a 600 mm water main were scheduled overnight to serve areas including Jupiter, Cap Aurora, Venus, and Saturn. In Mamaia, a major failure on a 600 mm main near the Piccadilly Hotel necessitated a temporary suspension of service for residents and tourists, while also requiring lane closures on Mamaia Boulevard for repair crews.
Efforts to stabilize and expand the network have since transitioned toward planned infrastructure projects. In Constanța, RAJA SA announced a scheduled 10-hour suspension on August 20 to facilitate network rehabilitation, including connecting new pipes and replacing valves as part of a 25 million lei investment.
In Alba County, APA CTTA Alba and the Alba County Council are implementing expansion projects to mitigate water shortages caused by drought and heatwaves. These developments include a pipeline crossing the Mureș River near Drâmbar, new pipelines in Ighiu, increased storage capacity in Cricău via a new pumping station and reservoir, and a major system expansion in Gârda de Sus featuring a treatment plant and 9 km of modern distribution networks.
