Water management and climate resilience in Vercelli rice

Overview

Discussions regarding water usage in the Vercelli rice industry have centered on the environmental impact of irrigation. Davide Gilardino, President of the Province of Vercelli, defended rice farming against claims that it is a primary driver of water consumption in the Piedmont region. Citing data from the Associazione Irrigazione Ovest Sesia (AIOS), Gilardino argued that the irrigation system follows a cyclical process where approximately 1.2 billion cubic meters of water are returned to the natural system from the 1.5 billion cubic meters withdrawn from local rivers.

Addressing these themes of water management and climate change, the second Risò International Rice Festival is scheduled for September 11 to 13 in Vercelli. Organized by the Municipality and Province of Vercelli in collaboration with the Ente Nazionale Risi, the event aims to promote Italian rice as a symbol of cultural heritage and international development. The inaugural ceremony on September 11 is expected to include Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The festival will feature seminars on global market impacts and climate change, with participation from the CIA (Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori) regarding the future of the European rice sector. Additionally, the Fondazione Marazzato will host an exhibition of historic machinery and vintage tractors.

In addition to the festival, the Ente Nazionale Risi will host an Open Day on September 8 at the Rice Research Center in Castello d’Agogna. This event will showcase the ‘Fertiriso’ project, which focuses on soil fertility and mitigating environmental issues in rice paddies. The center also plans to present new rice varieties developed through genetic improvement and artificial crossing techniques designed to address climate change challenges.
