Water-related accidents in Latin America

Overview

A series of fatal and ongoing water-related accidents have been reported across several countries in Latin America.

Initial reports detailed two separate drowning incidents involving young men in Mexico and Ecuador. In Ixtapa, Mexico, 22-year-old Isabelo de Jesús was found dead in the Mascota River after entering the water to escape the heat. In Ecuador, 26-year-old Nission Solórzano died while fishing in the Blanco River.

Subsequent reports expanded the scope to include Costa Rica and additional regions in Mexico. In Tamaulipas, Mexico, 26-year-old José Daniel “N” drowned while swimming at the El Nacimiento resort. In Costa Rica, the Red Cross conducted searches for a 55-year-old man missing in the Toro Amarillo River, where heavy rains had caused water levels to rise three meters above normal. Additionally, a Panamanian national was reported dead after drowning in a creek in the Talamanca sector of Limón.

More recently, search operations have been launched for individuals swept away by currents during storms. In San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Mexico, authorities are searching for a person missing after being carried away by heavy storm flows, with efforts expanding toward Arroyo Seco. In Panama, the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) is searching for a 24-year-old woman who fell into the Zaratí River in the Coclé province while attempting to rescue a pet.
