Weather alerts in Liguria, Italy
Overview
In the Liguria region, specifically Genova, authorities issued a yellow heatwave alert for August 17 through August 19, 2026. This followed a period of extreme heat, though the alert level was lower than previous red alerts.
As weather instability increased, a new yellow weather alert was issued for Genoa, effective from 10:00 to 23:59 on Thursday, August 20, due to forecasted thunderstorms.
In response to the thunderstorm forecast, the Municipal Civil Protection Plan has been activated. Authorities have ordered the closure of all construction sites and excavations in torrent beds. Furthermore, pedestrian access to the Passo Carlineo walkway on the Chiaravagna torrent is prohibited. Local police and Civil Protection volunteers are tasked with monitoring the city’s main waterways during the alert period.
Residents have been advised to take precautionary measures, including protecting ground-floor premises with sandbags, closing cellar and garage doors, and moving vehicles to higher ground. Citizens are also urged to avoid low-lying areas, underpasses, and locations near riverbanks during the alert.
