Weather and wildfire smoke in Western Washington

Western Washington has experienced fluctuating weather patterns characterized by warm temperatures and varying air quality. Initially, the region transitioned from warm, sunny weather to an unsettled pattern involving potential weekend thunderstorms and gusty winds, particularly in the mountains. During this period, a Red Flag Warning was in effect for parts of Central and Eastern Washington due to wildfire and air quality concerns.

By late August, the region faced a period of high temperatures and hazy skies caused by wildfire smoke drifting from eastern Washington over the Cascades. While temperatures in the Puget Sound region reached the mid to upper 80s, central Washington saw highs in the 90s. Forecasts indicated a shift toward cooler temperatures and increased cloud cover following the arrival of onshore winds to clear the smoke.

In mid-August, an upper-level low pressure system approaching from the southwest brought increasing cloud cover and a transition toward unsettled weather. Forecasts for that period included rain and potential thunderstorms, with the highest risk for gusty winds and lightning located in the mountains and Cascades. Authorities expressed concern that dry lightning could trigger new fires while gusty winds might spread existing ones.

By early September, a new weather system moved toward the Washington coast, bringing rain and gusty winds. In the South Sound, significant thunderstorm activity was expected, with Tacoma facing wind gusts up to 28 mph. The Seattle area anticipated scattered showers and isolated thunder, with temperatures cooling to the mid to upper 60s. Conditions were forecasted to dry out heading into the Labor Day weekend.
