Weather instability in the Dominican Republic

Overview

The Dominican Republic continues to experience weather instability characterized by high humidity, heat, and precipitation. In early September, Indomet predicted a transition from sunny mornings to afternoon showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts. Moderate rainfall was expected in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Samaná, and San Pedro de Macorís, while meteorological alerts remained active for Valverde, Dajabón, and Santiago Rodríguez due to the risk of rising rivers and flash flooding.

By September 2, temperatures returned to between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius with scattered cloudiness. While rainfall decreased across much of the country, the Dominican Meteorology Institute still predicts afternoon showers in several provinces. A tropical wave is expected to influence weather conditions within the next 24 to 48 hours, potentially increasing cloud cover and the likelihood of scattered showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts in regions including Greater Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal. There is currently no threat of tropical cyclones in the Caribbean.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) maintains a green alert for potential river rises and flash floods in vulnerable areas of Valverde, Dajabón, and Santiago Rodríguez. Medical specialists continue to monitor the impact of Saharan dust clouds on air quality and respiratory health, noting that the specific risk depends on the concentration of particulate matter reaching ground level.
