WhatsApp feature and privacy updates

WhatsApp has implemented a series of functional and security updates to its platform. Initial updates introduced features such as message editing, chat locking via biometric recognition, view-once media, and the ability to manage multiple accounts on one device. To enhance security and account recovery, the app added an option for users to link an email address to their accounts.

Subsequent updates expanded group communication capabilities with the introduction of an ‘@all’ feature, which allows users to mention all members of a group simultaneously for urgent notifications. Further privacy enhancements were also rolled out, including options to hide online status, profile photos, and read receipts, alongside improved tools for managing group notifications and message status tracking.

Beginning January 15, 2026, a significant update was rolled out to WhatsApp’s global user base, introducing artificial intelligence-based virtual assistants and advanced management tools for large groups. This update also refined privacy controls, allowing users to manage read receipts on an individual basis for specific conversations rather than through a global setting. Furthermore, a new security architecture was implemented to provide more detailed configuration keys, intended to give users greater control over their data protection and digital footprint.

More recent security enhancements include the implementation of Passkeys for Android and iOS users, enabling logins via biometric data or screen lock codes instead of traditional PINs. The platform has also strengthened two-step verification by replacing standard six-digit PINs with complex, alphanumeric passwords. To combat scammers, a new feature for Android users provides details on unknown callers, such as their country of origin and whether they share a common group with the recipient.
