Yahuarcocha endurance racing in Ecuador

Overview

The 12 Horas Ecuador endurance race returned to the Autódromo Internacional José Tobar Tobar in Yahuarcocha on September 26, 2026. Organized by the Federación Ecuatoriana de Automovilismo y Kartismo (Fedak), the event featured 50 crews from Ecuador and several other nations, including Spain, the United States, Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, and Peru.

This competition marked a return to the region’s motorsport history, occurring 55 years after the inaugural ‘12 Horas Marlboro’ held on September 26, 1971. The 2026 event coincided with the 420th anniversary of the city of Ibarra.

Team Ron y Escudería Abro EC secured victory in the race and the P1 Prototype category. The winning crew comprised Ecuadorian drivers Abigail Ron and Marcelo Ron, alongside Colombian drivers Gerónimo Gómez, Felipe Ceballos, and Ricardo Suarith. Driving a Radical SR3 prototype, the team completed 393 laps, covering more than 1,450 kilometers.

The race outcome was decided by a late shift in leadership. The Abro de Ecuador team held a prolonged lead until approximately 40 minutes before the finish, when a mechanical failure involving the transmission and a broken chain on their Radical PR6 prototype occurred. Following a safety car period, the Team Ron group took the lead. Abro de Ecuador finished in second place with 390 laps, while Quito-based pilot Patricio Avellán took third place in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with 370 laps.

Other category winners included Carlos Salazar, Álvaro Espinosa, Camila Espinosa, and Juan Espinosa in Gran Turismo; David Terán, Matías Burneo, A. Benavides, M. Goyes, and V. Chaparro in TC 1600 PRO; Juan D. García, Esteban Abello F., Galvis, N. Fondrini, and S. Prieto A. in TC 2000; and Patricio Avellán, F. Pazmiño, and Álvaro Espinosa in TC Open.
