Overview

In late July 2026 the National Park Service recorded a series of visitor safety failures at Yellowstone. On July 21, tourists ignored warnings and entered the Grand Prismatic Spring, while vehicle crashes, medical emergencies and drownings contributed to a high fatality rate, especially among older men.

The park’s rutting‑season bison also caused multiple incidents. A fisherman was warned just in time as a bison approached from behind on the river, and two drivers suffered tire bursts after bulls struck the front‑passenger wheels of their SUVs. Earlier in July, 65‑year‑old Carl Isom‑McDaniel was thrown eight feet by a bull bison, breaking a femur, while his grandson escaped unharmed. Another driver, Troy Isdahl, experienced a similar tire puncture after getting too close to a bull’s head.

On July 22 a TikTok video posted by visitor Tonya Names showed a bull bison charging a black Volkswagen SUV and bursting its front tire; the driver reported no injuries and was able to pull over. The incident, highlighted again on July 27, underscores the ongoing risk of bison encounters during the aggressive rutting period.

Park officials continue to advise visitors to stay at least 25 yards (23 metres) from large wildlife and have called for stricter enforcement of safety protocols.
