YPG-SDG dissolution and integration into Syrian state
Overview
The YPG-SDG organization and its autonomous administration in North and East Syria have begun a process of dissolution and integration with the Syrian government. Initially, officials reported that nearly all issues regarding integration with the Syrian army and government had been resolved, aiming for a unified state, army, and flag. This shift was linked to the ‘Terror-free Turkey’ initiative, with officials noting that the process involved transferring public institutions and oil wells to the Syrian government.
Following these developments, Mazlum Abdi, leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDG), announced the completed integration of military, security, and administrative sectors. This merger specifically includes the incorporation of SDG and Asayish forces into the Syrian Ministries of Defense and Interior.
In August 2026, Mahmut Berhudan, a Kobani official for the YPG-SDG, announced that the organization would dissolve within days, effectively abolishing the current autonomous administration structure. Berhudan noted that the group has no demand for a separate Kurdish state and praised Turkish leaders for their roles in this geopolitical shift. While military integration was largely settled, questions remained regarding the status of the YPJ (the female wing) and Turkish-identity YPG members.
Subsequently, the SDG/YPG officially announced its dissolution. Under an agreement reached with Syrian President Ahmed Şara, the group’s forces are being integrated into the brigades of the Syrian Army. In response to the transition, Turkish authorities have launched investigations into social media accounts accused of spreading disinformation or propaganda intended to provoke unrest regarding the new security paradigm.
