Overview

In June 2026 Bulgarian indie band ALI announced a four‑city summer tour (Sofia, Burgas, Varna) that would culminate on 17 July as the opening act of the inaugural PHILLGOOD Festival in Plovdiv. The city‑wide PHILLGOOD Month, launched on 7 July, linked the festival with the Hills of Rock event (24‑26 July) and turned streets, bars and public squares into additional stages, featuring graffiti installations, QR‑code menus and bilingual guides.

The festival’s line‑up expanded beyond the initial headliners The Cure, Gorillaz and Moby to include Wolf Alice, Sleaford Mods, Suede and later, according to an August 2 report, Marilyn Manson, Sex Pistols (Frank Carter), Northlane, Last Train and House of Protection. Three stages – PHILLGOOD, PHILLCOOL and PHILLRAVE – hosted a mix of rock, indie, electronic and experimental acts, with local Bulgarian bands highlighted on the PHILLCOOL stage.

Security was reinforced by the Regional Police Directorate, gendarmerie units and a private firm, with controlled entry via the “Chayka” hall, wristbands for ticket holders and a guarded parking zone on Karpovitsa Boulevard. Police warned that intoxicated, masked or armed individuals would be barred.

Attendance figures confirmed the festival’s draw: roughly 15,000 visitors on opening day, about a quarter from abroad, and an average of 20,000 per night across the three days. The influx generated millions of leva for the local economy, but also triggered a surge in hotel and short‑term‑rental prices (apartments €300‑€700, hotels up to €900), raising concerns about speculative pricing that could deter future attendees.

Organisers reiterated the ambition to position Plovdiv as a cultural hub for the Balkans and to expand the festival in future editions.
