India illegal liquor and gambling crackdown
Overview
Indian authorities have intensified raids against illicit liquor networks across multiple states. On 29 July, the Gujarat State Monitoring Cell, led by Director General of Police G.S. Malik, conducted a raid in Jamnagar district. Officers seized approximately 5,978 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer in Sanoshi village, valued at ₹77,71,400; including other items, the total haul exceeded ₹1 crore. Three people were arrested, and 13 others were declared wanted. This followed a seizure in Kutch earlier that month. The following day, police in Punjab’s Kapurthala district uncovered a 1,000-litre underground tank concealed beneath a bedroom floor, extracting 270 litres of illegal liquor and related equipment. One suspect was detained while another remains at large. In Madhya Pradesh, officers raided a house in Gadhakota district, confiscating 564.78 litres of domestic and foreign spirits valued at roughly ₹4.04 lakh; the property owner fled, and a case was filed under the state excise act. By mid-August, enforcement in Gujarat expanded to include large-scale transport interceptions. In the Ahmedabad Rural district, Bagodra Police seized 7,164 bottles of IMFL at a toll plaza, valued at approximately ₹26.81 lakh, resulting in the arrest of an individual from Uttar Pradesh. On 23 August, the Gujarat Police State Monitoring Cell conducted raids in Vadodara and Anand. In Vadodara, at Nilkanth Villa Flats, authorities recovered 16,394 bottles of alcohol in roughly 470 boxes. Including seized vehicles, the total value exceeded ₹1 crore, and seven individuals have been named as wanted suspects. In Anand district, a raid near the Bhalaj-Anand Road led to the seizure of 150 boxes containing 7,187 bottles of IMFL and beer, valued at roughly ₹19.63 lakh. One person was arrested, and five others are wanted. These operations follow a recent incident in Bhavnagar where 13 people died after consuming methanol-laced liquor.
