Aarau rave shooting investigation

Overview

A shooting occurred during the early hours of a Sunday at the Aarau Rave VOL. 7 techno festival, held at a horse-racing track venue in the Schachen district of Aarau, Switzerland. The attack resulted in the death of 22-year-old Italian national Maria Spinelli and left several others injured, including Swiss and German nationals.

Swiss police have classified the incident as a spree killing (Amoklauf). Investigators report that the 43-year-old Swiss man arrested in connection with the attack fired more than 40 shots indiscriminately into the crowd. Authorities specified the use of an AK-74 assault rifle and a pistol, noting that the weapons used were legally registered. The suspect also reportedly fired a pistol at a vehicle in a nearby parking lot, though no one was injured in that instance.

The suspect, a resident of the village of Montsevelier, surrendered to police in Delémont approximately 24 hours after the attack. He was identified following an intensive manhunt involving over 130 interviews and more than 100 public tips, after an eyewitness spotted a white delivery van with Jura license plates. Neighbors described the man as isolated and quiet, noting they had no suspicion regarding his possession of weapons.

The suspect has confessed to the spree killing, stating he acted alone and reported suffering from mental health issues. While investigators considered hypotheses including terrorism, they found no evidence of ideological or extremist motives. The incident has prompted questions regarding the legality of firearm possession for individuals with known psychiatric struggles, as the victim’s family has called for a thorough investigation into how the suspect legally obtained his firearms.
