Agbara Nla: The Return box office performance

Overview

The Nollywood faith-based film ‘Agbara Nla: The Return’ has achieved record-breaking commercial success in Nigeria. During its preview period from September 25 to October 1, the film generated approximately N71 million from 12,134 admissions, which was reported as the largest single-day preview gross in West Africa.

Following its official release on October 1, the film’s total opening tally, including previews, reached N170.59 million from 28,468 admissions. This performance marks the largest October opening on record and the largest non-December opening for a Nollywood movie. It currently stands as the third-largest Nollywood opening of all time, trailing only ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa’ and ‘Behind The Scenes’.

Distributor Nile Group reported sold-out shows and packed cinemas nationwide. The film, directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, is a modern reimagining of a 1993 classic by Mike Bamiloye. The plot follows two professionals who abandon their careers to spread the Gospel in a village controlled by a powerful herbalist.

Recent data indicates the film has outpaced major Hollywood releases on local charts. Revenue has been heavily concentrated in the South West, with Lagos accounting for 50.8 per cent of reported earnings.

By late October, the film had grossed ₦408.3 million at the Nigerian box office, making it the highest-earning faith-based movie in the history of Nigerian cinema. Distributed by Nile Entertainment, the production held the number-one spot for four consecutive weeks. The film also achieved international success, earning $120,660 during its opening weekend in selected theaters across the United Kingdom and Canada.
