AISM multiple sclerosis fundraising campaign

Overview

The Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association (AISM) conducted its 2026 ‘Mela di AISM’ initiative from October 2 to 4. The nationwide campaign utilized approximately 14,000 volunteers across 5,000 Italian squares to distribute 3 million apples to raise funds for scientific research, local services, and rights protection for those living with multiple sclerosis.

For a minimum donation of 12 euros, participants received a 1.8 kg bag of apples in one of three varieties: red (Noared), yellow (Golden Delicious), or green (Granny Smith). The campaign featured chef Alessandro Borghese as a testimonial. Localized efforts were reported in areas such as San Roberto, where the Pro Loco organized an event, and throughout the Cosenza province, where volunteers collected funds in squares and near supermarkets.

All proceeds are dedicated to supporting patients, many of whom are young adults between the ages of 20 and 40. The initiative addresses a significant health landscape in Italy, where approximately 150,000 people live with the disease and roughly 3,650 new diagnoses are made annually. Multiple sclerosis is a leading cause of neurological disability in young adults and carries an estimated annual social cost of 6.7 billion euros.
