Ballando con le Stelle 2026 premiere and jury controversy

Overview

The 21st season of the Rai 1 dance competition, Ballando con le Stelle, premiered on October 3, 2026, hosted by Milly Carlucci. The season features a new studio at Saxa Rubra and a revamped jury including Carolyn Smith, Ivan Zazzaroni, Guillermo Mariotto, Alberto Matano, and Barbara D'Urso, who replaces Selvaggia Lucarelli.

The premiere has been defined by significant tension and social media backlash regarding the new jury lineup. A central controversy arose from D'Urso’s critique of Ornella Muti and Pasquale La Rocca’s Argentine tango, where she noted a lack of ‘passion’ and suggested Muti appeared frightened. This comment drew boos from the live audience and sparked a ‘querelle’ over potential jealousy, as noted by host Milly Carlucci. Simona Ventura previously questioned if D'Urso was being ‘gelosetta’ (jealous) due to her past professional connection to La Rocca. Additionally, Guillermo Mariotto criticized D'Urso for making personal comparisons between her own past performances and the current contestants.

While jury member Mariotto noted that the addition of Matano and D'Urso has created ‘performance anxiety’ within the panel, veteran judge Carolyn Smith suggested the format prioritizes dancing over controversy. Meanwhile, former contestant Francesca Fialdini, managing the ‘tesoretto’ prize fund, stated she intends to reward contestants who demonstrate ‘soul’ and authenticity.

In the competition, Aurora Ramazzotti and partner Nikita Perotti secured the first episode victory via public televote. Other debut scores included Ornella Muti with 40, Alessandro Matri with 36, Alberto Rovagnani with 32, and Riccardo Rossi with 12. Actor Massimo Ghini has also joined the cast, paired with instructor Valentina Fiorini.
