Amazon LOL: Last One Laughing series development

Overview

Amazon MGM Studios is developing a U.S. adaptation of the international comedy competition ‘LOL: Last One Laughing’ for Prime Video. Based on the Japanese series ‘Documental’, the format requires comedians to avoid laughing for six hours to win. Fulwell Entertainment was selected for production. Following the series winning Best Entertainment programme at the 2026 BAFTA TV Awards, Amazon Prime Video confirmed a four-part Halloween special hosted by Jimmy Carr. Scheduled to premiere on October 23, the special features Jack Dee, Daisy May Cooper, Phil Wang, Lou Sanders, Reece Shearsmith, Harriet Dyer, and Tom Allen. Additionally, Amazon has confirmed the cast for the third series of the show. Jimmy Carr returns as host, with Mel Giedroyc returning to assist with deputy duties in the control room. A notable format change involves Roisin Conaty transitioning from a sidekick role to a participant. The confirmed lineup includes Harry Hill, Katherine Ryan, Lee Mack, Jon Richardson, Katherine Parkinson, Michelle de Swarte, Richard Ayoade, Morgana Robinson, and Josh Jones. Richard Ayoade and Mel Giedroyc will compete as returning participants. In Germany, Amazon Prime Video is expanding the franchise with the spin-off ‘LOL Next’, hosted by Hazel Brugger. Launching on September 10, 2026, this four-episode season features ten social media stars and internet personalities, including Aditotoro, SelfieSandra, and Phil Laude, competing to avoid laughing for four hours. Unlike the original format, ‘LOL Next’ implements stricter rules where a single laugh results in immediate elimination. The winner earns the right to donate 50,000 euros to charity. ‘Tagesschau’ announcer Susanne Daubner is scheduled for a guest appearance. Following its launch, initial audience reception has been largely negative on platforms such as IMDb and Moviepilot, with viewers expressing disappointment regarding the choice of participants and a disconnect between the content creator-focused cast and the expectations of long-time viewers.
