Aptera, a California-based electric vehicle company, has reached a significant production milestone by ordering the bodies, frames, and suspension components for its first 40 production vehicles. This move marks the company’s closest step toward mass delivery in its nearly 20-year history, transitioning from validation builds toward limited customer deliveries. The first production bodies and chassis are expected to arrive in October 2026, with the company targeting the completion of these initial 40 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2026.

To support this transition toward higher-volume manufacturing, Aptera has entered into a strategic production partnership with Shanghai-based Launch Design. Valued at up to $44 million (RMB 300 million), the program includes assembly fixtures, tooling, vehicle testing, and pilot production. Under this agreement, Launch Design will deliver finished subassemblies directly to Aptera’s final assembly facility in Carlsbad, California, to simplify integration and provide access to an international supplier network intended to improve unit economics. Two-thirds of the program costs will be paid in cash, with the remaining third settled in warrants to purchase Aptera stock.

Independent testing by TÜV Rheinland has validated the solar capabilities of the Aptera Atlas 1. During three days of on-site testing in July at the Carlsbad facility, the vehicle delivered between 4.23 and 4.75 kWh of usable energy into its battery pack per day, exceeding the company’s 4.0 kWh target. Conducted by solar expert Dr. Giorgio Bardizza, the tests utilized calibrated instruments to measure energy reaching the battery after conversion losses. Depending on vehicle positioning and solar angles, this energy translated to a solar-only driving range of approximately 68 to 76 kilometers (roughly 40 miles), with the highest yield achieved when the vehicle’s rear flap was raised and angled toward the sun.
