Argentina wins men's and women's rugby sevens titles

Overview

Following their success at the South American Games in Rosario, the Argentine national rugby sevens teams, Los Pumas 7s and Las Yaguaretés, moved to Villa Carlos Paz to compete in the South American Sevens tournament on October 10 and 11, 2026.

Las Yaguaretés entered the competition seeking a fourth consecutive continental title. The women’s squad, led by coaches Nahuel García and Facundo Salas, maintained the same 12-player roster that secured the recent gold medal. Captain Paula Pedrozo highlighted that playing on home soil provides a significant advantage due to local crowd support.

The men’s team, directed by Santiago Gómez Cora, aimed to gain competitive experience before the World Circuit season. Entering the tournament with a record 11 continental titles, Los Pumas 7s competed in Group A of the Cup.

On the opening day of the tournament at the Carlos Paz Rugby Club, both national teams remained undefeated. Los Pumas 7s secured first place in Zone A after a 59-0 victory over Paraguay and a 24-7 win against Colombia, with tries scored by Francisco Calello, Santino Zangara, and Sebastián Dubuc. Las Yaguaretés also dominated their matches, recording a 62-0 win over the Dominican Republic and a 69-0 victory against Guatemala.

Argentina concluded the tournament by securing double continental titles. Los Pumas 7s claimed their 12th South American title by defeating Chile 24-5 in the final, remaining undefeated throughout the competition. Las Yaguaretés achieved their fourth consecutive championship with a 19-10 victory over Brazil in the final. The tournament also served as a qualification pathway for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers, and the World Rugby Sevens Challenger series.
