Argentina Ushuaia power plant development
Entities: Ushuaia · Austral Petróleo, Gas y Electricidad S.A. · Logística Antártica S.A. · Gabriela Castillo · China
Overview
In mid‑July Argentine officials inspected the newly approved 60‑MW combined‑cycle plant in Ushuaia, confirming that construction would follow the environmental impact study and meet rising electricity demand. By late July a 6,200‑tonne cargo arrived at the Port of Ushuaia in 1,840 packages containing turbines, generators, transformers and metal structures. The delivery was hailed as a historic milestone by Terra Ignis Energía president Maximiliano Dalessio and by Energy Minister Gabriela Castillo as the fulfillment of years of planning.
A ten‑day operation coordinated by Logística Antártica, Austral Petróleo Gas y Electricidad and provincial and municipal agencies is moving and storing the equipment near the city’s sanitary landfill, with traffic impacts expected on main arteries. The governor and the energy minister reiterated the plant’s importance for reliable power in the coming decades.
Separately, the provincial government approved a US$153,014.40 purchase of emergency generators to address a severe winter power emergency, underscoring short‑term needs while the new thermoelectric unit and its backup system are being installed.
On 29 July 2026 the unloading, transport and storage of the equipment began. Fifteen trucks and five trailers will complete more than 250 trips from the port to the plant site along Avenida Perito Moreno, moving conventional loads from 07:00‑19:00 and oversized pieces from 09:00‑17:00. Energy Minister Gabriela Castillo described the start as a "historic day" for the city’s energy future.
