Argentine labor union activities and leadership
Overview
Argentine labor unions, including various branches of the CGT, have engaged in leadership transitions and organizational activities aimed at addressing economic challenges.
In early July, regional and municipal union leaders were re-elected in Formosa and Rosario. The re-elected officials pledged to expand professional training and noted difficulties regarding wage negotiations and dialogue with municipal governments.
Subsequently, labor organizations held regional meetings and expos across different provinces. These events, such as those in La Plata and Manuel Alberti, focused on promoting worker unity, social justice, and providing services like health checks and training to help workers navigate the current socio-economic context.
In August, the Argentine government and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) reached an agreement regarding the collection of union dues. Facilitated by the Secretariat of Labor, the resolution addresses disputes over “solidarity quotas”—contributions deducted from non-affiliated workers—and establishes a mechanism for union financing that adheres to the executive branch's new regulatory framework. This agreement is expected to allow for the renegotiation and ratification of more than 800 previously stalled collective bargaining agreements, providing greater economic predictability for various production sectors.
However, tensions have escalated as the CGT intensifies opposition to the administration of Javier Milei. CGT co-leader Cristian Jerónimo reported that 380,000 jobs have been lost, warning that continuous company closures are reducing formal employment. The union is currently deliberating on a potential fifth general strike and has planned mobilizations, including a protest against the Ministry of Economy regarding citizen debt and a September 2 mobilization to protest declining industrial activity.
