Argentine livestock auctions and cattle breeding
Overview
Various livestock auctions are being organized across Argentina, focusing on high-quality cattle genetics for breeding and meat production.
Cabaña Jotabe, a division of Caldenes Agropecuaria, has announced its 77th annual auction for September 4 in Cañada Seca, Buenos Aires. The sale will feature approximately 90 bulls and 330 pregnant heifers, focusing on Hereford genetics bred for export markets. Internal assessments of 492 steers showed that 87% fell within the ‘Prime and Choice’ categories based on the USDA scale.
Other scheduled events include the 20th auction for Cabaña y Estancia ‘La Cassina’ at the Sociedad Rural de 9 de Julio, managed by Melicurá and Leo Jaconis Servicios Ganaderos. This event will offer over 60 bulls, including Angus pedigree and controlled varieties, alongside pregnant heifers. Additionally, the ‘Los Criadores’ group is holding its sixth joint auction in Laprida at the Espada Hnos. facilities, involving the San José de Lucas Lagrange, Agroganadera San Ignacio, and Santa Luisa ranches.
Market activity has reached notable milestones, including a record-breaking sale in Tres Arroyos during a Cabaña Santa Rosa auction. A 50 percent share of the Angus bull ‘Álvaro’ was sold for 300 million pesos (approximately US$ 200,000) to a consortium from La Pampa. ‘Álvaro’, a descendant of the bull ‘Mateo’, previously earned titles such as ‘Gran Campeón Macho Colorado’ and ‘3rd Best Bull’ at the Palermo Rural Exhibition. Furthermore, the Santo Domingo ranch held an annual 100 percent Hereford auction, where bull averages reached 16.25 million pesos and maximum prices hit 35.5 million pesos. Industry participants continue to note that the sector is benefiting from favorable climate conditions and prices.
