Asantehene completes working visit to the United States
Overview
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, announced plans for a two-week working visit to the United States and a subsequent one-month leave of absence. To ensure administrative continuity in Asanteman, the Asantehene appointed the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu III, to oversee affairs during his absence. This transition occurred as the Kumasi Traditional Council continued to manage traditional matters, including land and stool disputes.
On August 23, 2026, the Asantehene commenced his trip to the U.S., accompanied by a delegation of Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers. Accompanied by Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the royal couple visited the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., to view rare biblical artifacts and historic manuscripts. The visit included academic and cultural engagements, such as a Royal Lecture at Howard University and an Akwasidae Festival celebration at Bowie State University in Maryland. During his lecture at Howard University, the Asantehene addressed the theme of ‘Governance, Culture and Diaspora,’ arguing that African culture must be integrated into serious discussions regarding development and governance rather than being relegated to mere entertainment.
Following his diplomatic and cultural mission, which included engaging with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Asantehene has returned to Kumasi. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed at the airport by the Kumasi Mayor and members of the Kumasi Traditional Council. In accordance with Asante tradition, the Queen of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Yaa Akyaa II, hosted a formal reception at the Manhyia Palace, where the Asantehene briefed her on the outcomes of his mission. His return was marked by large-scale celebrations in the streets of Kumasi, attended by thousands of residents.
