ASP Trapani healthcare service expansions
Overview
The provincial health authority (ASP) in Trapani is implementing several healthcare expansions and service improvements. In July 2026, the extraordinary commissioner approved a €41.066 million project for the Sant'Antonio Abate Hospital. This expansion includes a new four-storey building featuring two radiotherapy bunkers, an 18-bed sub-intensive care unit, an operating block with four theatres, and various specialized surgical wards. Following a decade of technical and regulatory delays, an open European tender has been launched for the construction.
In August 2026, the ASP Trapani moved to enhance pediatric services through an agreement with freelance pediatricians. This initiative establishes Pediatric First Intervention Points (PPIP) with availability on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00 and on weekends. The agreement provides hospital-level support, including laboratory and diagnostic services, and offers consultancy for emergency rooms in Marsala and Mazara del Vallo. Sabrina Pulvirenti, the extraordinary commissioner, noted the strategy is intended to “unite territorial and hospital healthcare to provide more capillary and timely care for the community's children.”
To address a backlog of nearly 24,000 pending healthcare services, the ASP Trapani recruited 16 external medical specialists following a public notice issued on August 10. These specialists, compensated at a gross rate of 80 euros per hour, target significant delays in diagnostic imaging (7,064 pending services), dermatology, vascular surgery, neurology, and ophthalmology. While specialists have been assigned to various disciplines, recruitment remains open for roles in angiology, vascular surgery, dermatology, and dietetics.
