Avenida Brasil plot developments and sequel news

Overview

The central conflict of the Brazilian telenovela ‘Avenida Brasil’ involves Nina’s retaliation against Carminha after discovering Carminha’s attempt to bury her alive. In a major plot development, Carminha discovers Nina’s true identity as Rita through photographic evidence and Nilo. Carminha attempts to neutralize Nina by using a sedative to leave her partially buried in a grave, but Nina escapes and begins using intimate photographs of Carminha and Max to threaten Carminha’s reputation within the Tufão family.

Fourteen years after the original series, the franchise is expanding through a sequel and international adaptations. Globo has commenced rehearsals and filming for ‘Avenida Brasil 2’, directed by Ricardo Waddington and written by João Emanuel Carneiro. Scheduled to premiere in January 2027, the sequel follows Carminha’s attempts to seek forgiveness and reintegrate into the family. Original actors Adriana Esteves and Murilo Benício are confirmed to return, alongside Cauã Reymond, who returns as Jorginho. Mel Maia has also returned to the franchise in a new role at age 22, portraying a character in a romantic relationship with Jorginho.

International interest remains high. In Portugal, broadcaster SIC is developing a local adaptation for 2027. This production aims to adapt the story to Portuguese reality, such as replacing the original landfill setting with a junkyard. The Portuguese cast includes Margarida Vila Nova as Carminha, Ricardo Pereira as Tufão, Laura Dutra as Nina, and José Condessa as Jorginho. Additionally, high viewership of reruns in Argentina has prompted interest from broadcasters like Telefe in acquiring rights to the upcoming sequel.
