Banditry and community raids in Nigeria

Overview

Banditry and community raids have resulted in killings and abductions across several Nigerian states. In late September, attacks in Niger and Zamfara states saw gunmen on motorcycles kill one person and abduct 10 others in Niger State’s Shiroro Local Government Area, while also burning houses and stealing cattle. In Zamfara, a midnight raid on Tsafe resulted in the abduction of five residents. On October 1, suspected bandits attacked the Babban Saura community in Kaduna State’s Chikun Local Government Area, killing one resident and abducting several others.

By mid-October, violence escalated. In Kaduna, gunmen killed four people, including a child, in Wawan Rafi II village, while community vigilantes killed one assailant during a kidnapping attempt in Kajuru. In Sokoto, a police inspector was killed during a robbery. On the weekend of October 10-12, at least 24 people were killed in separate attacks: 13 in a Zamfara trader convoy ambush and 11 by suspected Lakurawa jihadists in Niger State.

In mid-October, security operations in Kaduna led to the arrest of 12 suspects, though bandits abducted a local councillor and his two sons in Zaria. In Zamfara, gunmen killed a resident despite a ransom being paid and threatened to burn vehicles on the Dansadau-Gusau road. By late October, violence surged in Zamfara as a terror leader led an assault on a military base, killing 14 security personnel and extorting a “protection levy” of approximately ₦360 million. Meanwhile, in Sokoto, bandits attacked a settlement near Usmanu Danfodiyo University, stealing cattle and wounding a resident.
