Indonesia illegal alcohol crackdown widens
Entities: Minuman Mengandung Etil Alkohol (MMEA) · Mohd Saufi Bin Othman · Djaka Budhi Utama · Burkina Faso · Rusman Hadi
Overview
Police and customs raids against unlicensed liquor continued through late July 2026, extending the operation beyond its initial focus on Papua. After the 23 June sting in Bantul and the end‑July bust in Depok, authorities carried out a routine‑activity drive in Bantul (16‑19 July) that added 219 seized bottles and several arrests.
On 18 July, Jayapura city police confiscated 97 bottles of illicit spirits and detained four sellers, reiterating the link between illegal alcohol and public‑order disturbances. A follow‑up on 20 July confirmed the Bantul and Jayapura seizures.
The crackdown peaked on 27‑29 July, when Bantul officials seized 307 bottles from 14 sites, while Bali customs and the strategic intelligence agency intercepted 19,142 bottles of illicit ethanol, averting an estimated Rp2.14 billion loss in tax revenue.
A related customs operation on 23 July in Bali seized roughly 20,000 bottles of illegal alcoholic beverage (MMEA), valued at Rp12.55 billion and preventing the same Rp2.14 billion revenue loss, marking the largest single alcohol seizure to date. The same week customs and police detained a Malaysian pilot at Soekarno‑Hatta Airport with about 26 kg of MDMA and 4 g of methamphetamine, and uncovered 3.428 tonnes of liquid mercury hidden in cargo bound for Burkina Faso at Surabaya’s petikemas terminal.
Authorities continue to urge public reporting and warn of further operations targeting remaining supply networks nationwide.
