Belém plastic surgery death investigation

Authorities in Belém, Brazil, are moving toward concluding an investigation into the death of 29-year-old entrepreneur Giovanna Coelho Gomes, who died approximately 27 hours after undergoing multiple plastic surgery procedures, including abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast implants, and gluteal fat grafting.

Her family has alleged medical negligence against surgeon André Santana Melo, claiming he failed to provide adequate assistance during a medical emergency in which the victim suffered four cardiac arrests. The Regional Medical Council of Pará (CRM-PA) has opened a formal inquiry into the circumstances of the death. The family also noted that the procedure lasted significantly less time than the estimated 10 hours.

As the case has gained public attention, additional women have contacted the family and legal team to report similar post-operative complications following procedures performed by the same surgeon. Legal representatives are organizing these reports to potentially pursue a collective criminal complaint with the Civil Police.

Following the delivery of a report from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) to the Civil Police, the investigation has resulted in the indictment of four doctors. The charges include aggravated involuntary manslaughter. The indicted professionals are surgeon André Melo, anesthesiologist César Collyer, and two duty doctors, including Marcelo Antony Dantas. André Melo also faces charges of ideological falsehood.

Defense counsel for Marcelo Antony Dantas has challenged the investigation, alleging the inquiry was closed irregularly. The defense claims Dantas was denied sufficient time to review case files and that his request for an adjournment was refused, leading to the inquiry being finalized without his statement.
