Beverage industry corporate milestones in Nigeria
Overview
The Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), a member of the Coca-Cola HBC Group, celebrated 75 years of operations in Nigeria. During a gala in Abuja, the company reaffirmed a commitment to invest up to $1 billion in the country over the next five years, noting that such investment is contingent upon a predictable policy environment.
A Socio-Economic Impact Assessment by consultancy Steward Redqueen found that the Coca-Cola system—comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and its authorized bottler, NBC—generated approximately $1 billion in value-added economic activity in 2024. This supported roughly 160,200 jobs, including 2,989 direct employees and over 157,200 indirect roles. The report highlighted a multiplier effect where every direct job supported 53 additional jobs elsewhere in the economy. Furthermore, the company spends approximately $601 million annually on goods and services from local suppliers.
On environmental initiatives, NBC was awarded the ‘Best Sustainability Project of the Year’ at the 2024 Industry Awards. This followed the commissioning of a Packaging Collection Hub in Apapa, Lagos, which can process 13,000 metric tonnes of PET plastic annually and is expected to support approximately 1,000 informal waste collectors. This project aligns with NBC’s goal to collect and recycle 100% of its packaging by 2030.
In a broader industry context, Nigeria’s food, beverage, and tobacco industry led the manufacturing sector in 2025, attracting N375.03bn in fresh investment. Major contributors include Nestlé Nigeria, BUA Foods, Dangote Sugar, and Unilever Nigeria. Additionally, Nigerian Breweries Plc is marking its 80th anniversary with its ‘Together, Every Moment’ campaign.
