BMW high-performance Touring model market expansion

Overview

BMW is expanding the availability of its high-performance Touring models in international markets.

In the United States, the company confirmed the return of the 2025 M5 Touring, a plug-in hybrid estate featuring a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine and an electric motor producing 727 horsepower. This marks the first time the model has been available in the American market since the E34 generation in the early 1990s.

Simultaneously, the BMW M3 Touring has entered the Vietnamese high-performance car market. This model offers a wagon body style with a cargo capacity of up to 1,510 liters when rear seats are folded, intended to provide more utility than traditional performance sedans.

Furthering the utility of the M5 Touring platform, BMW M has developed a specialized high-performance police patrol concept. Engineered in Garching, Germany, the exhibition model features a custom livery of blue, neon yellow, and retro-reflective white. Due to the wider bodywork of the M5 Touring compared to the standard 5 Series, the design includes a slimmer, more aerodynamic light bar to maintain sensor and camera functionality.

Recent details on this custom build reveal that the vehicle produces 727 HP and 1,000 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. While the exterior features official police livery and integrated blue flashing lights, the interior retains standard M5 features, such as red leather seats, and lacks the specialized storage compartments typically found in functional patrol vehicles. BMW has indicated the possibility of these plug-in hybrid vehicles being available for official purchase by law enforcement agencies. The M5 Touring Polizia showcar is designed to demonstrate high-speed pursuit capabilities, though it is not currently intended for active police service.
