Overview

BMW has introduced new customization and security features for its luxury sedan lineup. Following these updates, BMW unveiled the Concept 7 Protection, an experimental armored version of the 7 Series. Built on the M760e xDrive plug-in hybrid platform—utilizing a 3.0-liter inline-six engine and an electric motor to produce 603 horsepower—the concept integrates ballistic steel, fiber-reinforced composites, and thicker bullet-resistant glass.

Designed to meet the ‘BayB standard,’ the vehicle targets street-level threats such as 9x19mm and .44 Magnum rounds. This positioning places it below the high-level protection of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 and Series 7 Protection VR9, focusing instead on situational risks like common street crime or road aggression. To preserve the 7 Series’ luxury aesthetic and driving dynamics, BMW integrated defensive layers into the doors, partitions, and beneath the panoramic glass roof.

To compensate for the added weight of these protective components, BMW recalibrated the chassis, brakes, propulsion, and driver assistance systems. Additional security features include an intercom for external communication without opening windows and an alarm system with visual and acoustic signals. While currently a concept, the company indicated it could serve as a potential expansion of its Protection portfolio for private and corporate clients in select markets.
