Brazil family farming and food security initiatives

Overview

Brazil continues to implement various initiatives to support family farming and enhance food security. In Bahia, the Sertão Vivo Bahia Project, supported by BNDES and the Green Climate Fund, has extended its application period to provide technical assistance to 20,000 farming families, with a long-term goal of benefiting 75,000. In Mato Grosso, the MT Produtivo project—a partnership between the State Secretariat of Family Agriculture and the World Bank—is accepting applications from cooperatives and associations until October 26 to support rural enterprises with technical and financial resources.

Technical assistance efforts are expanding through direct field guidance. In Cuiabá, the Municipal Secretariat of Agriculture is working with the Santa Tereza community to improve soil management and crop diversification, including banana, turmeric, cassava, and pepper. These efforts aim to integrate small-scale producers into government procurement programs like the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) and the National School Feeding Program (PNAE). Similarly, in Jaraguari, the Agency for Agrarian Development and Rural Extension (Agraer) is assisting farmers in transitioning to diversified production, such as passion fruit and green beans, to facilitate direct negotiation with consumers.

Social assistance and holiday campaigns remain active. In Ceará, the NGO Ação da Cidadania has launched its 33rd ‘Natal Sem Fome’ (Christmas Without Hunger) campaign, aiming to collect 40 tons of food. In São Gonçalo do Amarante, the municipal government has begun distributing 20,000 Christmas food baskets to low-income families registered in the CadÚnico system, specifically targeting those with a per capita income of up to R$ 250.00.
