Bread Day and harvest celebrations in schools
Overview
Educational institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia have held various community events to observe Bread Days and harvest thanksgiving.
In Vareš, students and teachers organized a humanitarian exhibition of bread, pastries, and produce. Scheduled for October 11 at the St. Michael Parish Church courtyard, the sale aims to provide food and school supplies for the St. Klara School in Rwentobu, Uganda. In Otočka, the Područna škola Otočka marked the occasion with plays, recitations, and songs, supported by local families who provided baked goods and autumn produce.
In Croatia, celebrations expanded to include various primary and kindergarten levels. The Zeko and Potočić kindergartens held events on October 15 and 16 focused on healthy nutrition and the origins of grains, featuring educational quizzes and traditional blessings of pastries. At Petar Zrinski Šenkovec and its Mačkovec branch, students participated in hands-on activities like kneading dough for pizza and traditional rolls. In Nova Gradiška, the Ljudevita Gaja school combined Bread Days with Apple Days, using poems, skits, and musical performances to teach students about respecting food and avoiding waste.
In Mostar, the Mostar Kindergarten Institution conducted its annual Bread Days to teach children gratitude and solidarity. The initiative concluded with a humanitarian sale at the Lenin Promenade. Director Danijela Kegelj stated the event aims to foster “values of community and sharing.” This year, proceeds are designated to support the “Minores” Association’s “Snack for All” project and the “Light of Hope” Foundation, which is working to build a house for oncology patients.
