Burendag community activities in the Netherlands

Overview

The 21st edition of Burendag, a major social initiative in the Netherlands organized by Douwe Egberts and the Oranje Fonds, set a new record with over 10,400 registered neighborhood activities. This milestone marks the first time the event has surpassed 10,000 activities, with more than 600,000 participants expected nationwide. Sandra Jetten, director of the Oranje Fonds, noted that activities are taking place in every Dutch municipality, highlighting a widespread desire for local connection.

Celebrations across various municipalities focused on fostering social cohesion and community resilience. In Almere Buiten, local police held an open house to reduce the distance between residents and law enforcement, addressing local issues such as fatbike traffic. In Heerenveen, the organization Re-Care hosted a neighborhood party to encourage interaction and integrate a local refugee housing group. Other regional activities included the 60th anniversary of the Zeilbergsestraat neighborhood association in Deurne and a street prize celebration in Zoeterwoude marking the town’s 750th anniversary. Additionally, housing corporation Omthuis supported initiatives in Baarn, Soest, and Leusden, utilizing neighborhood managers to facilitate communication and prevent social isolation.

In Harderwijk and Hierden, residents organized community breakfasts, barbecues, games, and scavenger hunts to strengthen local ties. In Nederweert, the day featured a competition to select the ‘Coziest Street of Nederweert 2026’. Following an evaluation of community engagement pitches, the Urnenstraat was named the winner, receiving a trophy and a voucher for future activities from Mayor Birgit Op de Laak and Alderman Ton Weekers.
