Burkina Faso malaria and vector control campaign

Burkina Faso has initiated a national campaign to combat malaria through the 2026 National Anti-Vector Days (JNLAV). The program focuses on environmental sanitation and the destruction of mosquito breeding sites, such as stagnant water, clogged gutters, and discarded tires.

On August 21, 2026, Health Minister Dr. Robert Lucien Kargougou visited the Brigade Laabal to inspect sanitation efforts and an alert reception platform. He observed gutter cleaning operations and noted that such hygiene maintenance directly reduces mosquito breeding sites. The Minister highlighted that these sanitation works involve individuals in conflict with the law participating in collective interest activities, praising both the Brigade Laabal and the Presidential Initiative for Community Development for reducing larval habitats.

Building on these efforts, the government launched the second edition of the National Vector Control Days (JNLV) to combat both malaria and dengue fever. This phase includes the identification and destruction of larval habitats, cleaning gutters, collecting used tires, and conducting spatial and indoor insecticide spraying. Government officials, including Minister of State Ismaël Sombié and Dr. Kargougou, emphasized that the campaign incorporates community mobilization and entomological surveillance. The initiative follows previous efforts that contributed to a significant reduction in malaria cases in 2025.

On September 5, 2026, the second phase of the JNLAV was officially launched. During field operations in Manga, Minister of State Ismaël Sombié and Health Minister Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou demonstrated the importance of environmental hygiene. Officials emphasized that individual responsibility in maintaining clean domestic environments is crucial to preventing mosquito proliferation. Additionally, the government is working to integrate traditional medicine into national healthcare frameworks to enhance health sovereignty by increasing research and the use of improved traditional medicines within official disease management protocols.
