Overview

In August 2026, Burundi continued to advance its economic and diplomatic agendas. President Évariste Ndayishimiye focused on domestic development by inaugurating the 12-story TOHA Hotel in Bujumbura, where he urged local investors to support the nation’s 2040 and 2060 development visions. To bolster the economy, the President met with officials from the Ministry of Mining, Energy, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, setting a target for these sectors to eventually contribute 50% of the national budget. Burundi reaffirmed its support for UN efforts and MONUSCO’s role in stabilizing the DRC and protecting civilians, emphasizing a concerted approach between regional countries, the African Union, and the United Nations. On August 27, President Ndayishimiye held further discussions with James Swan regarding the security situation in eastern DRC. These talks focused on the UN mission's mandate and regional stabilization efforts, including the Doha and Washington peace processes, following the deployment of a ceasefire verification mission to Minembwe in South Kivu. By late August, political and institutional efforts to realize the ‘Vision 2040-2060’ plan intensified.
