Canary Islands energy transition initiatives

Overview

The Canary Islands is implementing various initiatives to support energy transition and decarbonization goals.

On the infrastructure side, the government has authorized the modernization of several thermal power plants to ensure energy security and prevent blackouts. This includes granting administrative authorization to Unelco, an Endesa subsidiary, to renew equipment across Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, and Lanzarote. The project covers 374.52 MW of capacity, involving the renewal of gas turbines and diesel groups without increasing electrical power or changing fuel types. In Tenerife, specifically at the Granadilla plant, Endesa is expected to invest approximately 24.2 million euros to prolong the life of two gas turbines by replacing essential components and updating control systems.

Simultaneously, the government is addressing energy efficiency through the Plan Renove de Electrodomésticos. Following a high-demand first phase and a second phase that activated 800,000 euros in new vouchers, the program is launching a third round of vouchers on October 19, 2026.

As of October 15, the initiative has facilitated the exchange of 4,547 vouchers, totaling 803,790 euros from a total budget of 1.6 million euros. Managed by Femete and Femepa, the program currently includes 217 participating establishments. Technical estimates suggest that replacing these appliances will result in an annual energy saving of approximately 476.2 MWh and a reduction of 262 tons of CO2 emissions. Juan Antonio Jiménez Arranz, president of Femete, noted that the plan is successfully “converting aid into real savings for households.” Users must use vouchers within 15 calendar days of issuance and present them before making a purchase at an affiliated retailer.
