Cangas del Narcea municipal financial management

The Cangas del Narcea municipal government has faced scrutiny regarding its financial management and infrastructure projects.

In late July, the council announced the completion of a €331,415 renovation of Calle Clarín, which included upgrading sewer networks, water mains, and road width. During this period, the council also reported clearing its final €13,000 debt installment to Banco Sabadell, an action the administration claimed would free up over €1 million for future public services.

By late August, the People's Party (PP) accused the council of widespread financial irregularities. The opposition alleged that 60 percent of the euros spent in 2025 were paid despite unfavorable technical reports, claiming the government used decrees to bypass 184 instances of technical objections. Specific allegations include the payment of €7.3 million within the personnel department despite a lack of formal job structures, and the allocation of €3.9 million for services using expired contracts or insufficient documentation.

In late August 2026, the PP raised further alarms regarding approximately €1.8 million in payments made for services lacking valid contracts or public tenders. The opposition claims the BNG-led administration has engaged in a continuous practice of irregular tacit extensions across up to 34 different files, creating what they describe as prohibited verbal contracts. A notable case involves the Home Help Service (SAF), where legal appeals have delayed the transition to a new contract. The Municipal Intervention has reportedly proposed an ex officio review of 15 files due to potential nullity, warning that these anomalous operations could lead to administrative and patrimonial liabilities for the Council.
