Carlos Alcaraz participation in Erste Bank Open

Overview

Carlos Alcaraz, the world No. 3, has accepted a wild-card to compete in the Erste Bank Open, an ATP 500 tournament in Vienna. His participation follows the postponement of the ‘Six Kings Slam’ exhibition in Saudi Arabia, which created a gap in his schedule. Alcaraz’s addition to the lineup provides a boost for organizers following the withdrawal of defending champion Jannik Sinner due to injury.

Returning to the tournament for the first time since reaching the semifinals in 2021, Alcaraz is scheduled to debut against Russia's Karen Khachanov. During press conferences, Alcaraz expressed a desire to regain competitive rhythm, noting that while he is satisfied with his form, he has not yet reached his peak. He also praised Alexander Zverev, stating the German player “totally deserves” the number one ranking due to his extraordinary tennis level and physical consistency. Alcaraz emphasized the importance of facing top opponents like Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner to identify areas for improvement.

In early tournament action, Matteo Berrettini secured a place in the second round with a straight-sets victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, winning 6-3, 6-4. Following his win, Berrettini appeared uncomfortable when questioned about Lorenzo Musetti’s recent success in Lyon, sparking social media speculation regarding a potential rift between the teammates. Amidst the tournament, Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri announced the provisional call-ups for the 2026 Finals in Bologna, including Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Musetti, Luciano Darderi, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori.
