Chilean Fiestas Patrias preparations and celebrations
Overview
As Chile approaches the Fiestas Patrias celebrations, public discourse has addressed health concerns, official government protocols, and regional festivities. Scientific research published in the journal Heart, involving over 562,000 participants, has raised warnings regarding cardiovascular risks linked to frequent fried food consumption. The meta-analysis noted a 28% increased risk of major cardiovascular events, a 22% higher risk of coronary disease, and a 37% higher risk of heart failure. In light of these concerns, nutrition experts are providing specific guidance on traditional foods like empanadas. María Cristina Escobar, director of Nutrition and Dietetics at Universidad Andrés Bello, noted that nutritional profiles depend on dough composition, portion size, and cooking methods. While 'pino' empanadas provide high-quality proteins, risks increase with high-fat meats, excessive salt, or lard-heavy doughs. She highlighted that baked empanadas offer a more moderate energy intake than fried versions, which absorb significant oil. On the political front, President José Antonio Kast is preparing for his first Fiestas Patrias celebrations since taking office. To mark the beginning of the Patriotic Month and the Glories of the Army, the President led a ceremony for the raising of the Great National Flag at the Plaza de la Ciudadanía. The event, organized by the Chilean Army, included Defense Minister Fernando Barros and Army Commander-in-Chief General Pedro Varela. This civic ritual is intended to strengthen respect for national symbols and connect citizens with republican traditions. His upcoming agenda includes participating in the Te Deum Evangélico on September 13 and the Te Deum Católico on September 18, as well as attending the Military Parade on September 19. Notably, the President intends to inaugurate celebrations at Parque O’Higgins rather than La Pampilla. In Rancagua, the “Mes de la Patria” celebrations have officially launched with the “Bienvenido Septiembre” ceremony at Plaza de los Héroes.
