China's promotion of Global Development Initiative at UN
Overview
Chinese leadership continues to utilize United Nations forums and diplomatic channels to promote the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and advocate for sustainable development. Marking the fifth anniversary of the GDI, the initiative has mobilized more than $23 billion for cooperation projects with support from over 130 countries and international organizations. The global development project database now includes over 1,800 projects across eight key areas, including infrastructure such as a water supply project in Abuja, Nigeria, and a bridge in Sarawak, Malaysia. Technical training remains a pillar of the initiative, with over 30 Luban Workshops providing training to more than 160,000 students.
In addition to the GDI, the Global Governance Initiative has completed its first year, supported by nearly 160 countries and organizations through the establishment of ‘Friends of Global Governance’ groups in New York, Geneva, and Vienna. At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, President Xi Jinping emphasized the SCO’s role in driving global governance reform and supporting the Global South.
Diplomatic efforts have also focused on regional capacity building, particularly in Africa. During a seminar for Francophone African journalists, former Ambassador Sun Jiwen advocated for local resource valorization, domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing, and agricultural development to ensure food security. Furthermore, the Chinese Ambassador to Guinea and the head of the Chinese Mission to the African Union issued a joint statement calling for strengthened consensus and inclusive, sustainable development to accelerate the UN 2030 Agenda.
