China economic slowdown 2026 – PMI, logistics, demand

Overview

Industrial profit growth kept slowing in 2026, with May’s YoY increase falling to 21.1% from 24.7% in April. High‑tech manufacturing continued to drive the modest expansion, keeping the official manufacturing PMI in expansion territory at 51.2 in June and a related survey reading of 50.3. The Logistics Industry Climate Index edged up to 50.6, with most sub‑indices in growth, especially for electronic equipment, machinery and energy‑saving appliances.

Consumer‑driven logistics remained fragile. Smartphone sales during the month‑long 618 festival dropped 13% YoY, confirming weak consumer sentiment. All major Chinese brands posted double‑digit declines except Huawei, which grew 19% and captured a 21% market share. Higher memory‑chip prices tied to AI‑infrastructure expansion squeezed margins for Honor (‑33%) and Xiaomi (‑24%). Apple’s shipments fell 9% YoY but the U.S. firm reclaimed the No. 2 spot through price cuts and subsidies. Analysts expect a double‑digit fall in total smartphone shipments for the year.

The finished‑goods index slipped to 47.7 and factory‑gate prices fell for the first time in six months, easing inflationary pressure. Bulk‑commodity prices remained elevated YoY despite a 1.7% MoM drop. Risks continue from transport bottlenecks, raw‑material cost spikes and Middle‑East supply‑chain strains, while the modest resurgence in high‑technology output offers limited offset to the broader demand weakness.
