Brisbane Lions face coaching and roster shifts

Overview

Following a Grand Final victory over Fremantle to secure a premiership three-peat, the Brisbane Lions are undergoing significant leadership and roster transitions.

Coach Chris Fagan, now in his tenth season, has officially announced he will step down from his role. Despite having one year remaining on his contract, the 65-year-old coach decided to depart following the club’s historic three consecutive premierships. This decision follows previous indications that the relentless pressure of coaching and a desire to be closer to family in Melbourne were factors in his consideration.

Simultaneously, star midfielder Lachie Neale has confirmed his departure from the club. The 33-year-old dual Brownlow Medallist and three-time premiership player will join Collingwood as an unrestricted AFL free agent. Neale has reportedly signed a three-year deal with the Magpies valued at approximately $1 million per season. His move comes after a difficult year involving personal challenges and a highly publicized marriage breakdown.

While Neale drew interest from clubs such as West Coast and Fremantle, he ultimately chose Collingwood. Brisbane list manager Dom Ambrogio and chairman Andrew Wellington both expressed gratitude for Neale’s eight seasons of service, with Wellington offering a light-hearted sledge regarding the move during the club’s awards night.
